Yushi Uehara: Unknown Urbanity in China - Village within City

The Village within the City is recognized in China as the structural problem of the abrasive Chinese Urbanization. The examination on village within city issues poses questions about the integrity of human-urbanity relationships.

The rapidly growing Chinese urbanization swallows surrounding villages and transforms farmland into metropolis. Village within City forms nested autocratic urban entities and its process structures a farmer to become a citizen. A Village within City is often a well-managed company where profits are made by the diverse activities.

The Pearl River Delta area is the front-runner of the Village within City phenomena. By choosing 7 villages from Shenzhen and Guangzhou, the research introduces the phenomena of the Village within City and explains the mechanisms of its transformation by establishing the role-play model between the five stakeholders. The research consists of three chapters: phenomena, mechanism and project; the latter integrates findings from the other. The research focuses messaging capacity of architecture and urbanism to the stakeholders on relevant findings.
