The documenta is widely regarded as the most important exhibition of contemporary art. It was started by Arnold Bode in 1955 in the city of Kassel. The artistic director of documenta 12 is Roger M. Buergel, an exhibition organizer of international repute. Together with the art historian Ruth Noack and in keeping with the artistic aspirations of the documenta, he will exhibit art from a wide range of places throughout the world, employing all kinds of different media. The art works will be placed so as to emphasise their relationship with one another rather than simply juxtaposed at random.

AI WEIWEI | FAIRYTALE

The highlights of this year's documenta include works of art and actions like those of the Chinese concept artist Ai Weiwei, who is bringing to Kassel 1001 of his compatriots to take part in an art happening entitled Fairytale. Drawn from all social classes and professions, these Chinese citizens will experience the confrontation with a totally alien (art) culture.
