GET IT LOUDER 2007 - HOMESHOWS
GUANGZHOU
| SHANGHAI | BEIJING
| SHENZHEN
| LANZHOU | HANGZHOU
| DALIAN | CHENGDU
HOMESHOW n.
can be understood as subversion or extension of the traditional public
space; it blurs the conventions of public vs. private, and develops a
new interpersonal culture; it is the guerilla tactic of subculture,
edging through the crevices of mainstream culture with will and
persistence. More info [Chinese only]

PAST
FORWARD
ORIENTAL VISTA
ART COLLECTIONS | SHANGHAI
MAY 12, 2007
TILL JUNE 20, 2007
PAST FORWARD re-examines historical
consciousness through a group of artists whose own lives have
paralleled the tumultuous and dynamic history of modern China.
Zhang Dali, Ren Hong, Liu Xinhua/Wang Lang, Sheng Qi and Zhang Nian all
grew up during the Cultural Revolution and came of age during China's
early years of economic reform. The group, all friends since the
mid-eighties, use distinctly diverse methods to explore the
representation of social reality throughout history. From fiberglass
casts of migrant workers to oil painting and photo archiving, from the
Cultural Revolution to Tiananmen and beyond, this exhibition shows us
that the past is still forever in front of us. More

NEW MEDIA ART
[plug.in] | BASEL, SWITZERLAND
MAY 6, 2007 TILL JUNE 17, 2007
[plug.in] features an
exhibition of Chinese artists working exclusively in the area of new
media. From the curator, Zhang Ga: "The rapid development of media
and communications technologies in China in recent years and the
increasingly extensive exchange and dialogues prompted by various
international new media art exhibitions and symposia in the Mainland
have sparkled new inspirations in art making among Chinese artists. No
longer satisfied with mere mental perception and a transfer of meaning
confined within a singular and closed environment, many Chinese artists
have in the past few years ventured out to experiment with a
participatory art experience and to renegotiate space and time with
audiences to explore an open system that expends the production of
meaning, in which chance and instability, vulnerability and
possibilities emerge as the contingent mirror image of the complexity
of contemporary life." More info >>

DEVELOPMENT BRIEF
An
independent publication established in 1996 to report on social
development and civil society in China, China Development Brief
features regular editorials across topics such as the environment,
education, media, and ethnic minorities. Editorials include the flagging campaign to eradicate
illiteracy, and a feature on a book that casts light on the hidden world of male sex
workers.
DEMOLITION
SITES, WEB SITES, AND VIRTUAL AND PUBLIC SITES OF EXPRESSION
Shortly after our fifth newsletter went out, the Chonqing nail house was
demolished as the owners and the developer reached a
settlement. For those of us that have been following its plight, rest
assured that its essence will live on in the recently purchased domain-
dingzihu.cn! Danwei.org offers
a feature on some amusing rural Chinese slogans. And for
those of us that prefer a more subtle location for our slogans, the
recent launch of MySpace China
may be more to your liking.
