    OU NING AND CAO FEI

Ou Ning (born in 1969, Zhangjian, Guangdong, China) and Cao Fei (born in 1978, Guangzhou, China) are both artists, filmmakers and researchers who are documenting the spaces of poverty and flux in large Chinese cities. So far the projects have focused on Guangzhou, Beijing and Shenzhen. In 2003 they produced The San Yuan Li Project for the 50th Venice Biennale, a video portrait of a "village in the city" in Guangzhou. In 2005 they got a fellowship from Kulturstiftung des Bundes and led a group of filmmakers, photographers, musicians and sound artists to research and document Da Zha Lan, a slum near Tian'anmen Square in Beijing. For the first Shenzhen Biennale of Urbanism\ Architecture curated by Yung Ho Chang, Ou Ning created Borders, Illegal Zones and Urban Villages, a montage of three genres of space that proliferate in contemporary Shenzhen as a result of its unique history as China's most productive of special economic zones. Their projects are collaborative. Working with video collectives, activists and residents, they are deeply respectful of the communities they engage. They live and work in Guangzhou, are both the founders of Alternative Archive, a platform for various cultural practices in Southern China.

Cao Fei won the Best of Young Artist Award of Chinese Contemporary Art Awards (CCAA) 2006.
