The creative and cultural explosion that has taken place in Chinese cities in recent years comes to Manchester in this groundbreaking exhibition exploring aspiration image and identity in contemporary China.

Charting the shift in Chinese society from the communal to the individual, The China Show explores how the different levels of China's new society are creating their personal lives and shaping their private identities through an emerging landscape of private apartments, new technologies, and the personalised virtual spaces of blogs and online culture. New media, design and lifestyle culture are replacing the mandates of centralized politics as aspiration and image become the catchwords for what some are already referring to as the Chinese Dream.

Featuring tours of China's radical new buildings, street-level video exploring the changing cities of china and a look inside the mobile and blog cultures sweeping the country, The China Show will be a rare chance to see inside the shifting society of one of the world's most influential nations.

The centrepiece of the show is a large-scale model of the Grand Moma development in Beijing, described by Business Week magazine in 2005 as one of the 'top ten' of China's New Architectural Wonders.

It also includes interviews and images from the Urban Fiction series by contemporary artist Xing Danwen. Danwen examines cultural status, the conflict between globalisation and traditions and environmental issues created by urban growth and development.

Other displays by MeWe design, graphic designer Ou Ning and fashion designer Wang Yiyang complete the exhibition.

Location:
Urbis, Cathedral Gardens
Cathedral Gardens
Manchester
M4 3BG
Tel: +44 (0)161 605 8200
Fax: +44 (0)161 605 8201
E-mail: info@urbis.org.uk
Websites: www.urbis.org.uk
www.chinaatmanchester.org.uk
