When we in the early 80s just opened the door, we found ourselves in the following situation; there is TV but no program. At that moment, we have two generations together, an older generation that is getting very old and doesn't have a clue what to do because they face a world in which everything has changed. And at the other hand the younger generation who is waiting for the older generation to give new instructions. But the older generation doesn't have any instruction.

Singapore is very critical for me, for many reasons. Singapore is the middle point of East and West. That is number one. Secondly, Singapore passed through the evolution that is happening in China now. The discussion has happened. The Singapore architect has become confident after the discussion. The new projects from Singapore architects are really confident. They became very original people in design, especially in small scale designs. They don't care about style anymore, they just focus on programmatic responses.
