Li, from Shanghai and Huang from Taipei bring to Hong Kong and the international art world a group of artists all of whom embrace art's power to create and transform our view of the world we live in. The title refers to the spread of China's influence beyond its political centers and its own borders to the broader international community. But with great power comes great responsibility. Just quickly as some Chinese reap the benefits of economic growth and development, so to the mood of many others turns to deepening concerns and misgivings about where it might all end.

Curator Yang Li's catalogue essay "Art's Free Walk" emphasizes the individual identity of the artist and the wisdom and knowledge necessary in his or her drive to implement ideas. Whether in terms of artistic concept, form, or method, Chinese artists have burst through barriers with a spirit that sees no limitations. They boldly use language and grammar to subvert questions of originality. Their incisive formal expressiveness and cultural critique manifests their involvement in questions both domestic and international.

Eight of the artists will be in Hong Kong for the opening. For some it will be their first visit to Hong Kong. Hua Qing's brash and bold paintings touch on the aggression that lies just beneath the veneer of civilization. He Jie's monochrome paintings depict a post-apocalyptic future. Zhu Hai's disembodied eyes appear in surreal juxtaposition with other everyday objects. The Chinese dinosaurs and the Chinese astronaut were both hugely popular when they visited Hong Kong. Li Hui combines references to both in his epic work "Amber". Both Xu Zhongmin and Weng Peijin use unconventional sculpture to actively engage with political concerns. Xu touches on China's relationship with Tibet and Weng with nuclear proliferation. And Li Songhua and Hungchih Peng make work that questions how we look at the world around us.

The other artists in the exhibition are Yin Zhaoyang, Shi Jing, Lai Shengyu and Yang Xiaogang (working collaboratively as Tamen), Zhang Ge, Chen Wenbo and Sui Jianguo working in collaboration with Wang Dongsheng.

Location:
Osage Kwun Tong
5/F, Kian Dai Industrial Building,
73-75 Hung To Road,
Kwun Tong, Hong Kong
Tel: +852 2793 4817
Email: info@osagegallery.com
Website:www.osagegallery.com
