People's Architecture

Peri-urban or urban fringe areas are the areas of urban expansion and encounter between rural and urban life. As China's cities not only expand but make themselves anew at break-neck speed, a whole new series of dynamic phenomena can be observed in the development of the peri-urban: peasants who become rentiers, rural migrants who man the industries located on the city's edge, and young urban professionals who move out to the urban periphery in search of the quiet life. The peri-urban is therefore the stage where China can be seen to reinvent itself.
